GreenGeeks is quite a unique virtual private servers company because as their name suggest, they are indeed a company that prides themselves on being as environmentally friendly as possible. In fact, they were recently invited by the EPA to join the “United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership” program.

If you are anything like our staff, then you are also wondering exactly how does a virtual private servers company go green? After all, they do have to keep electricity flowing to their servers 24/7, and that is not to mention the air conditioning that is required to keep all of that hot hardware cool all of the time.

They do it by purchasing wind energy credits for all of the electricity that they pull from the power grids. In fact, they do not buy it on a 1 to 1 ratio, but on a 3 to 1 ratio. This allows GreenGeeks to proudly boost that they are a 300% green company.

GreenGeeks is also highly innovative, and has been able to come up with ways of reconfiguring their severs so that they run cooler and use less electricity. If all of that was not enough, they also have a few other tricks up their selves.

Whenever it is possible, they let their employees telecommute so that they do not have to come to the office everyday and waste gasoline. They also suggest that everybody that works there bring their own food, and maybe enough for other people in reusable containers. If all of that was not enough, whenever they have to print something out on a sheet of paper, they make sure to use both sides of the paper to cut down on the waste.

Since our 2012 review, a lot of things have changed on GreenGeeks including an expansion of their VPS hosting plans. As you can see to the left, they now offer a total of 5 VPS plans to choose from, all of which include cPanel in their pricing.

All plans include an upgrade to SSD technology which are solid state drives that help improve I/O speed and database read speeds as well.Additionally, GreenGeeks says that your VPS will be ready for use (provisioned) within 60 seconds of ordering, will place your VPS on a blacklist-free IP, free migration service, free nightly backup, a 99.9% uptime guarantee and 4 CPU cores.

Knowledge Base – For VPS customers, they offer a “VPS Hosting” section that covers just 17 topics. This section could be dramatically improved to include additional VPS topics to help new users get the most out of their Virtual Private Server.

Video Tutorials – Besides the stock cPanel video tutorials, you’ll find the WHM section (the main server control panel that manages your VPS) to be helpful with over 25 videos that will help you.

Live Chat – This system is available for all sales and support needs. After you have your VPS plan, you can use the live chat system for support and is available 24x7x365.

Phone Support – They provide toll-free telephone support. Their telephone operations are available Monday thru Friday from 9AM to 12 midnight EST. On the weekends, it is open from 9AM to 8PM EST

If you want to do your part to save the planet, using a green web host like GreenGeeks is the way to go! Sure, their prices are a little higher due to the cost of purchasing certified REC’s, but in the end, it is well worth the cost if you are all about lowering your footprint on Earth.

In Summary

Overall, GreenGeeks is a solid company. Their offer is a tad more expensive and their customer support options may be lacking, however, there’s nothing that we’ve seen from our review that would prevent us from recommending them to our viewers.
